Gift ideas for Valentine’s Day
February 14 in the world, as well as in Poland, is celebrated as the Day of Lovers. It is a holiday that is inextricably associated with love. At that time, it is enough to go out on the streets to see red hearts, roses, kissing teddy bears in store windows. If you are in love/love, it is worth remembering your partner on this special day. Love can be expressed in many ways. What can be helpful is undoubtedly a small gift. Of course, you can reach for flowers, which will give great pleasure to any woman, or opt for a perfume suitable for a man, but remember that there are definitely more ideas for a Valentine’s Day gift.
What is the history of Valentine’s Day?
Speaking of Valentine’s Day, it should be clearly noted that the holiday of lovers has a really rich history. Indeed, its roots should be sought as far back as ancient Rome. At that time it was celebrated – interestingly, also on February 14 – the eve of Lupercalia. Faun, who was the god of fertility, was worshipped then. It was a joyous holiday, on the occasion of which lavish parties were held. In the fifth century, however, Pope Gelasius I decided to replace it with the memory of St. Valentine, who was the patron saint of love. His story is quite sad.
When Emperor Claudius II issued a decree forbidding men to marry, Valentine decided to perform weddings in secret. However, he was quickly captured and imprisoned. There he met the blind daughter of a guard, with whom – with reciprocity – he fell in love. The strength of their love was so great that the girl regained her sight. Unfortunately, Valentine was executed for his misdeeds.
The 17th and 18th centuries were the time when love letters began to be written. They were spread by the British and the French. They often reached for truly unique forms, based on poetry. It is interesting to note that in different corners of Europe the Day of Lovers was celebrated slightly differently. And so, for example, the Scots on February 14 used to make fortunes. In Spain, this special holiday appeared only in the middle of the 20th century. Its symbol very quickly became a red rose. Interestingly, in this country it is given not only to the beloved. Men give these beautiful flowers to all women who are close to them and important to them.
What does Valentine’s Day look like in Poland?
Despite the fact that Valentine’s Day has a really long history, it came to Poland rather late, only in the 1990s. However, before we turned to this tradition, the holiday of lovers was Kupala Night. Initially, Valentine’s Day was seen as an unfavorable import from the West. It was emphasized that we had our own customs and traditions that we should cultivate. However, our attitude changed rather quickly. Today, St. Valentine’s Day is an opportunity for Poles to be together and show affection for each other.
